Furthering my love of all things weathermen, excuse me, weatherpeople, related

This was on Slate under the heading, “30 percent chance you’ll hate this weatherman.” I’m sure weather/meteorologist humor ranks right up there with Math humor for most people, but I love this.

This was supposed to be a shoutout to Craig in the SoCal

local interest, news, not cool, weather 2 Comments »

But instead of a shoutout, I’m left with confusion.

You see, it all started a couple of months ago when Dave and I both read the same article in the paper that said the new Meteorologist at 9news had a cat named Stormy… just like our SoCal brother from another mother, Craig. The new Meteorologist (Becky Ditchfield) just started this week, so I thought this would be good time to post the picture of Craiger’s stormy on the mobile communication device.

But I found this nonsense on the 9news website

Becky lives at home with her cat “Cody”, and loves anything that has to do with sports.

See full bio text from 9news.com

Dave and I must have been smoking something that morning, right? If so, Dusty Saunders from the Rocky Mountain News was there also. He kind of made a big deal of the Stormy connection.

9News again will have a “Stormy” weather connection beginning June 4.
The Gannett-owned station has hired meteorologist Becky Ditchfield, currently a weather reporter at KTHV in Little Rock, Ark. as Nick O’Kelly’s replacement in the station’s weekday morning news block.

In the ’70s, 9News’ main weatherman was the late Leon (Stormy) Rottman, a congenial talent who earned his forecasting stripes in the military.

According to a Web site, Ditchfield is very close to her cat, named Stormy.

Rocky article, March 28

Sure, who cares. All I’m saying is that I remember a time when someone would tell you the name of their cat and you could believe them.

BTW, here’s Stormy on the cell phone. No word on if it’s Stormy’s mobile, Craig’s mobile, or if Stormy can still be reached on that number.

The Pom-Pom and Pony-Tail tests

funny, news, weather 8 Comments »

Today’s wind in Denver was big news. Big gusty wind.
Once again, Fox 31 was all over this story. I think they were hoping to catch cars and trucks tumbling over each other and catching fire.

Once again, Felt Crystal (named as such after Cara wondered out loud if I thought the news director just threw a felt cutout of Crystal on a board to decide where she was reporting from that day) is sent to the far reaches of the viewing area (Georgetown).

Einstein tongue However, the real treat is various scientific proofs Melissa Mollet gives us for the wind… because, of course, we can’t see wind, just its effects. Before you laugh too hard, I think she may have borrowed the Ponytail test from Einstein… check out his wind-worthy hair!

Best part… “I didn’t even think we had a story here! Boy, was I wrong!”

Thank You Fox 31 News for making it worth my wild to get up early!

Storm team coverage, part 2

Insightful and riveting.

Ode to local “Storm Team” coverage

Dear local TV news:
I love you.
You always make me laugh.
Hard.
Not just a chuckle.
or a titter.
but full-on laughter.
the kind that is good for the soul.

I know your jobs are tough at times. In the midst of wars, military scandals, presidential races, moronic radio DJs, campus massacres, and irrelevant sports stars you have to make the routine comings and goings that make up everyday life seem like they still matter. And you’re right, those things still matter.
But in an effort to make yourselves relevant, you try too hard and you become silly caricatures of reporters covering news.

This morning, Fox News shoved two of its reporters out of the newsroom for some field work. Now, I didn’t see this particular report, but judging from the color of the sky, I’d say this might be the first of the newscast. And since Good Day Colorado kicks off at 5am, I’d say this was recorded at about 5:02am.

Ok, update on the road conditions. Two pretty girls telling me to drive safely because it’s still cold and icy. Good work FoxNews.

But here’s where it gets funny. Over the course of the next several hours (I saw my first report from Monument – the girl in the green fleece – at about 6:45a) the storm had clearly passed and the two reporters weren’t going to luck out and catch a massive accident on tape. But good old FoxNews stuck to their guns and left them out there!! These reporters must have filed a dozen reports from Monument and Genesee which degraded into posing behind various plowed snow piles to make it look like she was desperate need of an ice axe just to free herself (Monument), numerous additional shots of her footprints in the snow to “prove” that there really was several inches of snow where she was standing (Genesee), and finally the reporter and the cameraman doing snowangels for the final time this season (Genesee). And basically all the reports were this, “well, yes the roads are not dry yet, so continue to be careful when you drive (ie – drive with your eyes open, moron!), yes it’s still chilly, and yes, I hope it gets warm soon.”

Hee Hee!

The Minnesotan in me…

sunThe Minnesotan in me forces me to tell you about the weather today. It’s a beautiful sunny 65-degree day… which, of course, is great since it snowed all weekend…. and is forecasted to snow again on Friday.
